O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton within Illinois and was graduated in 1981, with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. Before shifting from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. Career O'Grady started her career as a model for Montgomery Ward, and well having a number of commercials. She debuted on the big screen in 1988 with the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby. She was then cast as an actress in the recurring role of ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Apart from guest-starring in other shows and appearing in independent films as well as produced for television, she also appeared as an actor in a variety of TV series. Donna Abandando, her first significant role in the ABC cop drama NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady was the long-haired secretary of the unit from 1993 to 1996. The actress was nominated to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama series each year. With her fellow cast members, she won an award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, for the Best Performance by an Ensemble in Drama Series.
