O'Neil was a student in high-school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. The quality of her singing impressed panel of judges and she was voted into an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges. However, she experienced significant defeats during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put in the bottom three spots and bottom two, respectively. They were stunned by the decision, and told the audience the fact that Melissa was the best contestant. In spite of consistently impressive performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil was able to advance to the top two spots in the competition's contest, Werner predicted that the morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie as she became her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially announced by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
